RACE

In turn, she was not the type of woman who would sit on the streets begging for money; Angie lived with different friends throughout her fifteen months of homelessness, and she always tried to better herself. This was difficult, because along with the physical absence of a home, she also felt empty inside. From young on, Angie was always dealing with issues of sadness, anger, and loneliness. For Angie, "It's not until talking to somebody, if you"re inclined to do so, that you can start to gradually unravel some of the rage and shame and sadness you experienced both as a child and an adult" (159). She didn't communicate with her family very well if at all. So when she was dealing with issues she internalized most of her problems. .
The problems began for Angie in her teenage years when she noticed that she had an eating disorder, blaming her disease on the sexual abuse she received as a child. When Angie was sixteen she became pregnant and forced to marry because it seemed like the right thing to do. Another tragedy stuck her when her baby girl died a half hour after birth. It was when she gave birth to her second child that Angie regained much of her strength.
The story of Angie defies the stereotypes that are generally given to the homeless people. She thought, "Although I was never without a roof over my head, I felt rootless, moving from place to place, staying with friends and acquaintances in D.C. and the nearby suburbs" (153). The majority of the population would say that most of the homeless people live on the streets, when in fact this is the exact opposite. There are many people that you would never guess are homeless. Some homeless people live in airports and train and bus stations, which seem to be the easiest to be unnoticed because of the amount of people that come and go each day.
Another characteristic that separates Angie from the stereotypical homeless person is that of their lazy nature.
