Animal experimentation

Moral issues play a critical part in the abolishment of animal experimentation because of the rights of the animals. Scientists argue that, in order to acquire information on the human anatomy, they must conduct experiments on animals. The scientists also argue that they should not conduct testing on any human being because it violates their human rights (Regan 17). On the contrary, these scientists conduct testing on chimpanzees, without any regard to the rights of the animals (Nowak). The chimpanzee has no choice in whether or not he or she agrees to the torture of experimentation, for the future in the human race. Like human rights, animal rights must be considered to answer the moral issue of the animal experimentation.
Biological issues play a crucial part in the banning of animal experimentation. The British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1992 states, "Much basic research on physiological, pathological and therapeutic processes still requires animal experimentation. Such research has provided and continues to provide the essential foundation for improvements in medical and veterinary knowledge, education and practice" (Aldhous). However, what the British Association does not state is that the reaction the animals have in the testing for a disease or virus like HIV may be quite different from that of a human. Wade Roush states "A chimpanzee baby boom launched by the National Institute for Health (NIH) in 1986 to provide animals for the study of AIDS created the current overcrowding. As a result only a single chimp among some 200 infected with HIV has succumbed to AIDS, making the species such a poor model for the disease that fewer than 20 are now needed each year. Resulting a high unemployment rate among chimps bred for AIDS research but never infected translates into a "financial hemorrhage" for the colonies, says Insel" (Roush). The trial and error of the NIH proved that the study of HIV in chimpanzees is ineffective.
