Life of the Author


When Bronte was a child her mother got very ill, so ill to the point that she refused to see her children. Bronte and her siblings were left alone, spending much of their time alone in a small study where they would read, write, etc. In Jane Eyre, Jane sits in a small study so she can secretly read. After, Bronte's mother's death, Mr. Bronte sends his children to school. His daughters went to a boarding school which was described much like Lowood School in Jane Eyre. "Our clothes were insufficient to protect us from the severe cold: we had no boots, the snow got into our shoes and melted there. . ." (Jane Eyre- NAWL 509).
             These were the conditions that Bronte and her sisters dealt with at their school which eventually took the lives of two of her sisters. The death of Bronte's two older sisters connects to the death of Helen Burns in Jane Eyre. As Jane gets older she becomes a teacher and then a governess. In Bronte's life she was a teacher at Ro Head School but soon became bored and tired with teaching so she became a governess. Many of the memories of Bronte being a governess connect to the character of Jane and her experiences as a governess. Bronte's writing ties to her real life even more than Woolf's .

             Catherine goes to Bath, she accompanies Mrs. Allen to several formal balls and really doesn't enjoy them very much. The author, Austen, loved any type of dancing and balls. She thrived off of them ever since she was young. By contrasting Catherine with herself, Austen can still put a piece of her into the writing, and also have a unique character by combining her traits and personalities with imaginary ones. A comparison Austen does make between herself and Catherine, is that both of them are "almost pretty.
