Regents Practice

William Saroyan once stated "Good people are good because they've come to wisdom through failure." This statement suggests that people of good nature become good by learning from their mistakes. This quote is proven to be valid within the novel The Great Gatsby, which was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and the tragic play Hamlet, by William Shakespeare. Within these two works of literature there are many characters that grow and gain wisdom through the occurrences of their lives. The main character of The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby, underwent many hardships throughout his life, which resulted in him becoming a better person who was thriving for a better life. The character of Hamlet, with the tragic play Hamlet, is a good person. However his good deeds were often of the violent sort. Both Hamlet and Gatsby display the mean of William Saroyan's statement.
The novel The Great Gatsby contains a variety of characters. The most prominent of them all was Jay Gatsby. Throughout the novel the reader learn of the obstacles that Jay Gatsby had to overcome in order to be where he is and who he is in his present day life. Jay Gatsby was a good person because he always had good intentions. Jay Gatsby wanted to live the American Dream of becoming economically successful and to reside in a residence of wealthy stature. Gatsby wanted to achieve this mainly due to a lost love, which proves that Gatsby had good, pure intentions. Gatsby tried to attain his dream and moved to Long Island, which is where the novel takes place. Gatsby had helped various people; including his neighbor, Nick. Gatsby did not keep his fortune to himself; rather he would often treat acquaintances to lunch, dinner parties, and small gifts. It was often though by some of the readers of The Great Gatsby that Jay Gatsby gave so much in his adulthood to compensate for the lack of gifts bestowed upon him as a child. This supports the quote by showing how the bad life that Gatsby lead before he became older and wealthy, which would influence his mindset.
