Red Convertible

The Red Convertible, a short story written by Louise Erdrich, challenges the reader's mind with numerous uses of imagery. This use of imagery throughout the story, gives the reader a chance to interpret the theme or any underlying meanings that exist.
Louise Erdrich begins her short story by telling the reader about an object that turns out to be a representative for numerous things throughout the story. At the start of the story, Henry and Lyman had gone up to Winnipeg and come across a red convertible that neither one can take their eyes off. The convertible, in reality is just sitting in a lot with a for sale sign in the window, but to the boys it is alive and gleaming. This description of the convertible is an accurate depiction of the calm, carefree attitudes both boys possessed at this point in the story. With just enough money in their pockets, Henry and Lyman, drove the car off the lot and began one of the greatest times in their life. The convertible, which of course did not have a top, represented the newly found freedom for the boys. They were no longer confined to their small North Dakota reservation any longer. They could drive away from what was all too familiar and set out for unknown territory side by side. The convertible, therefore, becomes their source of self-discovery as they travel wherever the roads take them. .
The story takes a dramatic turn when the warm weather becomes cold and the boys are forced to return home to the reservation. Erdrich, foreshadowing this drastic change, switches from talking about flowers of the summer to sharp hatchets of war. This change in tone tips of the reader that the story is not going to continue as smoothly has it had been. Soon after Henry and Lyman return home, Henry's draft number comes up and he has to leave for the war. While Henry is off at war, he like many other soldiers, were forever scared by the horror they had to see and do.
