Africa's Imperialism

The Europeans saw their culture as heathen because they were unable to understand it. .
Though Africa was decolonized in this century, imperialism still exists in many ways. One of the indications that imperialism persists is that African tribes, such as the Ogoni tribe and other African states feel the need to write charters and Bill of Rights for their protection and freedom. One such document is the Charter of the Organization of African Unity which was written in May of 1963 by the heads of the States of Africa assembled in Ethiopia. .
The first point made in the Charter is that the heads of the African States are "convinced that it is the inalienable right of all people to control their own destiny." According to the essay read in class about the diamond wars and this charter, the destiny of Africa was controlled by Europe and even the United States in 1963, and is still controlled to some extent today. A good example of this is the Ogoni tribe in Nigeria whose lands were taken and exploited by American and Scandinavian oil companies. About two thirds of all the best land in Africa is owned by European and American companies. This charter is an attempt to renew control of their own land. .
The second point of the charter is that they are "conscious of the fact that freedom, equality, justice and dignity are essential objectives for the achievement of the legitimate aspirations of the African peoples;" Dignity is something that the African people have been stripped of for many years. This idea is demonstrated toward the beginning of Heart of Darkness at the first station Marlowe stopped at where the Africans were being worked to the ground, the dead or dying being discarded in a field. The African man who was accused of starting a fire was beaten until the last drop of dignity was seized from him and he was forced to take refuge under a tree humiliated, crying and shaking. This was enough to even stir a trace emotion in Marlowe as he observed.
