Conflict Resolution

            Conflict Resolution in Learning Teams.
Conflicts arise because of avoidance of issues, undue accommodation, or unrealistic compromise. Avoiding conflict, accommodating the needs of others, or compromising to "keep the peace," may seem beneficial; however, learning to resolve conflict as it arises is more effective. Realizing conflict occurs when personalities clash with one another, differences of opinions arise, and cultural differences come into play, our team has committed to work through conflicts by utilizing open and honest communication. We are all God's creatures, imperfect in every way; and none of us is exempt from conflict, as we know that no one is perfect. This realization, coupled with a plan of action, will ultimately help us work together to reach our greatest goal of obtaining our degrees. .
Like the ostrich that puts his head in the sand to avoid the turmoil around him, some learning team members possess the same characteristic of "avoidance", and are capable of utilizing the same tactic as the ostrich when under pressure. They avoid individual initiative, contribution to group efforts, and introduction of new ideas to their team members. They resist exploring new territories, and in doing so may jeopardize the mission of the team meeting from the very beginning. .
When conflict raises its head, these individuals may tend to run away from the problem and hope that it goes away; which seldom resolves the issue at hand. To keep themselves at a safe distance, rather than confronting issues in person, they may complain or place blame by utilizing email or chat lines. Face-to-face communication is paramount if conflicts are to be resolved. Telling a third party, rather than addressing your concern with your team member, does not replace an in-person conversation. Avoiding confronting unresolved conflicts, allowing them to smolder beneath the surface is just like a hot lava flow under the surface of a volcano.
