The characters are one the opposite of the other, so that the reader would understand better the character in every aspect. Two of the characters which are really one the opposite of the other, are Ariel and Caliban, which are both the servants of prospero in "the Tempest." Both characters are used by the powerful magician in the play, but in the way they serve their master there are big differences.
Ariel is a spirit of the air which Prospero uses in his plot of revenge. This spirit, which only Prospero can see, is a character that Shakespeare puts in the play to show the reader the pure and good part of the human being. Ariel is a willing servant of the magician, which helps his master willingly, so that Prospero could finally free him. On the other hand Caliban is a monster which is half human and fish, which has always been living in the island, has a beast by his mother who was a witch. This character is in the play as the opposite of Arial, to show the dark part of the human nature, the evil part. He is been taken as another servant by Prospero, which has been taken under control with the fear of punishment.
Both characters serve prospero or try to gain control over him. Ariel is the good and faithful servant which the magician can rely always on. The spirit uses his own magic to help in every way his master. He spies on the people who want to kill or harm Prospero, and helps him to the end to gain the proper justice to all the felony that has been done to Prospero. Caliban instead is a servant that Prospero uses for menial jobs, such as pick up woods. The magician at the start tries to civilize the beast, but with no result, once he tried to rape Miranda, so Prospero had to ban the monster from the cave they live in.
