In the story, The Odyssey, Odysseus's men were tempted by the lotus eaters, and giving in to the temptation, they lost sight of what really mattered most. Many teenagers in today's society are faced with similar temptations. Sex is one of many. Although sex is not a drug, it can become just as addictive, ruining lives of young people who participate.
When Odysseus's men decided to eat the lotus plant, it became addictive. Like a drug, the lotus plant affected the men's look at reality. In a way, sex is the same way. Not many people take sex as a serious issue, but in a lot of ways it is just like a drug. Sex can become very addictive, even after a person's first time. Our bodies have a natural reaction to affection. When people take place in sexual intercourse the brain sends a message throughout our entire body, affecting our horomones. This action stimulates a natural sexual drive in the human body. The more a person participates in sexual activities, the more the body becomes addicted the the feelings he/she may experience.
Millions of teenagers are pressured into having sex every day. A majority of time it is not because teens want to, but because of the increasing amount of peer pressure or just blatant couriousity. No matter how hard one may try, the issue is simply unavoidable. It happens to be everywhere, especially in the media. On the television millions ,including children, teenagers, and adults, see advertisements all the time, promoting sex. However, the issue does not occur on the television alone. Musicians today have become more prone to put the subject into their lyrics, because they know that "sex sells". This sends a message to many teenagers today, saying that it is "o.k." to have sex.
Not many teenagers realize how extreme the consequences of sex can be. When teenagers give in to this temptation, they are immediately putting themselves at risk of catching a STD, AIDS, or having an unwanted pregnancy.
