She entered - no, make that strutted - into the room with purpose, swaying her hips, intently aware of the beaming spotlight that followed her as she sauntered about the dance floor while flawlessly lip-synching "Toxic" by Britney Spears. Scantily clad in nothing but a tiny, black tube-top and matching leather skirt, Miss Fonda Cox tossed her long, strawberry-blonde locks and zeroed in on an unsuspecting gentlemen at the bar. She teasingly licked her lips and started caressing the man's hair. He seemed unsure of what to do or say to this Amazonian woman standing before him, and the crowd laughed uproariously in response. Miss Cox never lost her place in the song.
This was a drag show, and the lip-synching, wig-wearing diva who strutted around in stilettos was 26 year old Scott Meadows in his element. Scott has been entertaining and shocking crowds along with several other drag queens every Friday night at The Paddock Club in Greenville, NC for the past five years. I ventured into this particular place with some of my friends after reading an e-mail that had been sent to the Theatre Department call-board. This e-mail was a special invitation for all ECU students of Theatre, Music, and Dance who had shown The Paddock tons of support over the past several years. Apparently, this club was going to be closing its doors after serving the community for more than thirty years and Saturday, January 31st the final show and farewell bash was to be held. The crowd who gathered around me that night was raucous and lively - perhaps from the liquor, or maybe it was from the contagious energy Miss Cox seemed to emenate. .
As the music faded out, Fonda slipped away back stage and shortly reappeared with microphone in hand. She appraised the crowd, and soon began cracking jokes about certain people standing out in the audience. Her first victim was a rather plump woman who was standing with a group of her friends.
