Baz Luhrmann

All three of his films contain the "Red Curtain" requirements, which means that the audience knows or can guess what is going to happen from the outset.
The storyline is simple. The set is a heightened created world. Each film includes a theatrical device e.g. archaic language, dancing or singing. Luhrmann also uses pathetic fallacy to portray how the mood of the film changes. For example in "Romeo and Juliet" the star crossed lovers have just got married and the weather is bright and sunny. Ten minutes later on Verona beach, (a totally made up set of which Luhrmann is very proud), Mercutio and Tybalt get into a fight which ends in death, the sky clouds over and inside the arch to the beach the weather is dark and grim with a single ray of light on the deceased Mercutio. .
Luhrmann also uses comedy to break up serious and intense scenes. In "Moulin Rouge" the scene starts with the main character (Ewan McGregor) explaining why he has moved to Paris and he tells us about his love for Satine (Nicole Kidman), this is broken up by bohemians falling through the ceiling accompanied with sound effects symbolising thoughts and ideas, Mixed with rapid and rough camera work it lightens up the tone of the sequence.
In "Strictly Ballroom" the final dance scene is extravagant and full to the brim with colours and wonderful mise-en-scene. The makeup is exquisite and the costumes are very elaborate. All this adds up to make Luhrmann's first film very special. .
Craig Pearce, Luhrmann's co-writer and great friend, has helped write many spectacular screenplays and scripts.
In "Moulin Rouge", Pearce and Luhrmann borrowed and blended songs from popular music from the 80's and 90's to make a completely original soundtrack that follows the course of the film and portrays the main character's love for one another. Pearce and Luhrmann wrote a new song, a secret song for the lovers to make their relationship even more special.
