Diversity

In college the culture shock was too much to overcome for many people that they had to drop out, or transfer to community college closer to home, resulting in what came to be expected: another decline in the amount of students graduating from a four-year university, and an increase in those who would never step foot in a classroom again after their first year at college. .
Due to the declining reputation of the school district many of the parents felt their children would be better off at private institutions and took them out of public schools. This would have resulted in a sharp decline of students attending the high school if the districts on the North Shore of Long Island weren't redrawn to include other towns home to many unlike people in Jericho, increasing the variety to become the student body that is present today. Now, Jericho High School educates a more culturally diverse group consisting of Asian-Americans, African-Americans, Indians, Hispanics, and still has its fair share of Caucasians, however once mostly Jewish there is now a blend of religions including Protestants, Christians and the ever-growing Greek-Orthodox population. There was also a blending of classes; both the extremely fortunate, middle class and few, but some lower class students learned in the same classrooms. A mixture of people allowed Jericho to rebound from the poor reputation it had received a decade ago to now being able to call itself the fifth ranked public school in the nation.
In addition to allowing Jericho to establish itself as one of the best public high schools in the country, it also mixed a person of many cultures which has many positive influences. It helps in creating a learning environment that reflects the demographics of the United States. The interaction of different people leads to a better understanding of the world around us. Familiarizing oneself with the assortment of people present in our nation is necessary in order to concentrate on furthering ones education at a University.
