7 year itch

He was not only going to be a faithful husband but he was not going to smoke or drink and he would accomplish his work load. If this were all to have been true then Sherman's superego would have been in control the entire summer and he would not have had any problems. But as Freud explains this never happens, a person's id always tries to take over causing the ego to come out and a struggle between the id and superego to develop.
As the movie progresses Sherman meets his new and very attractive neighbor that moved in upstairs for the summer. And as soon as Sherman sees her his id begins to slowly take over control. He ends up inviting her down for a drink, both of these things which his superego would never allow. And then before she even gets down the stairs he begins to try and retrieve the cigarettes that he had tried to lock up before. Although his id fights to come out it never completely takes control. His ego mediates between the id and superego the whole movie as not to allow the id to take complete control.
Another Freudian concept that is displayed in the movie is the first of three Pre-Oedipal phases. This is called the oral phase and is the stage of human development when the mouth is the "dominant erotogenic site." When babies are first born and still breast feeding the only pleasure and satisfaction they get is from their mother while feeding. It gives them a sense of oneness with the mother and a sense of security. .
According to Freud if a child is not able to have this phase in their life or the oral phase is cut short then it could result in problems as an adult. For example they could eat a lot or smoke or maybe even suck their thumb, all of these things will fill a void in that person's life, they feel that something that was never given to them as a child and they still subconsciously feel they lack it as an adult. Sherman portrays this concept through his actions in the movie.
