On the Waterfront is one of the few gangster movies that show the repercussions of violence and death. It is by far one of the most effective and grizzly organized crime movies of all time. It ranks number eight on the AFI's top 100 greatest movies of all time.
The feeling of this movie is incredible. The entire feeling of this movie is grimy, dirty, and depressed. It conveys a sense of hopelessness and despair "perhaps this is why On the Waterfront is so effective. This is a movie that gives the viewer the sense of corruption, greed, and pain. In one of the most memorable shots, Terry shouts "I coulda been a contender!- to his greedy brother that made him throw the big fight of his career. Ever since then young Terry has been a wise guy bum, living off his brothers roots in crime. I have never felt a movie with so strong of a message.
The overall plot is original and historical. It stars ex-fighter Marlon Brando in a war of the worlds between his love, and the mafia. In the end, after seeing his brother killed in cold blood, he has to make a decision--does Terry violently shoot down mob-boss Johnny Friendly, or does he testify against him and corruption in court? The films direction makes it so nothing is ever predictable; some of the films most powerful scenes really catch the viewer with their guard down.
The acting in On the Waterfront, played by Brando is nothing short of remarkable. This movie is known to be one of his best performances and is often parodied. We get the sense of his character, Terry, through Brando's looks, feel, and speech. Brando seems perfect for this role. He eats, sleeps, and breathes his character. Brando makes us feel as though he has really done the right thing in the closing of the movie. .
