The patient, Christopher I, came in to see Dr. McAdough, his family physician, in June of 1988, after his mother noticed unusual rashes forming under CI's armpits and on the inner part of his thighs. After a quick observation of these areas, the condition seemed to be symptoms of heat rash, which is often called the prickly heat or miliaria. A heat rash is a finely popular or vesicular inflammation of the skin resulting from prolonged exposure to heat and high humidity, where tingling and prickling sensations are common (Anderson, Anderson, & Glanze, 2000, p.715). CI was an 11 year old healthy young boy, who"d only had allergic reactions in the past from wasp stings. After being asked, we learned that no one within his family had ever had any condition similar to this.
Subjective Data.
CI came in to the hospital complaining of irritated itchy areas underneath his armpits and between his upper thighs. These areas were red and sensitive looking, CI did not complain of having any related pains in either of the areas. His mother told us that the rash on his upper thigh appeared almost a full week before any signs of it in the armpit area. CI stated that he felt the most relief when he placed a wet bar of soap on these areas and held it for over 45 seconds. When the patient was asked if he had come in contact with any form of toxin or poisonous plants prior to these rashes appearing, CI responded with not to his knowledge. His mother further responded with the point that CI wasn't affected, in any way, when he had come in contact with poisonous plants in the past. .
Objective Data.
The areas that CI complained about tended to be between an inch and a half and two inches around. When feeling these areas, there seemed to be several small bumps within a tight area, along with the feeling of being warm to the touch.
