Losing What You Love


She continues to drink through out the story and even tries Anis Del Toro, which is illegal alcohol drink in most countries due to the drink killing people when a lot of it is consumed at one time. Moreover, Jig says, "everything tastes of licorice. Especially all the things you've waited so long for, like absinthe" (334). This line means that Jig has been waiting to become pregnant and now that she has, she feels she has to kill the unborn baby. Absinthe is a kind of drink that is also considered a poison. This could mean, that in Jig's mind, she has already decided that she is going to kill the baby, however, in her heart, she still has not made her decision. .
             As the couple carry on with their drinks, the man continues to bring up the subject of abortion. It is a matter that the woman tries to avoid, but her lover seems to keep bring back up. Their conversation is very awkward because the man refers to the abortion as a mere "simple operation." It becomes evident that the woman wants to keep the baby in the end, but wants to please her partner at the same time. The use of the words "everything" and "not anything" also have meaning throughout story. The boyfriend is constantly telling Jig, "it's really not anything" (335). He feels that the child that is growing in Jig's stomach is more than nothing to him. He does not want the baby and has put it out of his mind. However, on the other hand, Jig, by at the end of the story has started to think of the child as something. She tells her boyfriend that "we could have all this and we could have everything" (336). The man repeatedly says that the woman does not have to have the abortion unless she wants, but she knows that if she keeps the baby then things between them will never be the same.
             The phrase, "Hills Like White Elephants" is a symbol that Jig's companion does not want to her to have the baby. The "Hills" refers to the shape of a pregnant women's belly.
