Dental Carries, a preventable disease

I am studying to be a Dental Hygienist, so this is a very important aspect of my life. It is essential that after every meal, the teeth are brushed. Flossing should occur once a day. Cavities begin to develop in hard to reach areas such as fissures, gaps, pits, etc. A good tip to remember is to hold the tooth brush at a 45 degree angle. It's important to reach inside, outside, and between your teeth. It isn't a bad idea to brush over the top of the tongue as well. After about two weeks a new tooth brush should be purchased to avoid the spreading of bacteria from the dirty brush, instead of elimination. When purchasing tooth paste make sure it contains fluoride, which helps rebuild tooth enamel, and is also approved by the American Dentist Association seal which is located on the package of the paste. Fluoride is used to help demineralize the tooth structure. One thing that is of value to remember since dental carries are such a transmittable disease, toothbrushes should never be shared.(Hume) Young children should consume fluoriated water. When children are young brushing should be supervised by an adult. Twice a day, only use a small pea sized dad of toothpaste and the child should try to spit out as much as possible. (Wardlaw 498) Over exposure to fluoride in young, developing teeth, actually cause more bad than good. One thing that is quite disgusting, is toothbrushes should never be shared, because dental carries is such a preventable disease. (Hume).
