Learning indirectly

(Ibid: 150).
Another country that teaches values through textbooks is Taiwan, with a focus on Confucian ideology. The predominant characteristic of texts books in Taiwan is their emphasis on filial pity, or ultimate virtue. The individuals that are modeled in the texts books are described by their fulfillment to their parents. One thing that is stressed in the Taiwanese culture is staying true to your parents. This involves taking care of them when they are seventy years old and troubled by old age. Besides family life, the texts books preach a lot about patriotism. Patriotism can be connected to the family because "the sanctity of the family relies on the strength and unity of the nation." (Martin, 1982: 139).
Another behavioral pattern that is dealt with in the texts books is diligent study. In first grade the students are introduced to the "quality student", the one "who gets up early for school". The other students who are modeled in graded school texts are the children who have over come poverty and hardship and went on to become scholars. The students learn about different social classes and how the lower class has to work hard to get the regular resources of life. (Ibid: 140).
The political issues of Taiwan that are brought up in texts are put in three categories: those relating to war with Japan and the Japan occupation of Taiwan, those relating to the communist occupation of the mainland, and national symbols like the flag, National Day, Confucius, democracy, Sun Yat-sen's birthplace, and the military. In Taiwan, the individual is to focus on the family, and is encouraged to have little political awareness or involvement. (Ibid: 151).
Through the school system, the Taiwanese Government promotes a revitalization of the traditional Confucian system of social behavior. Indirectly the government teaches it citizens respect by the way the government treats it's own people and the international community.
