             I have personally downloaded mp3s, just like many others I know. If you look around mp3s are everywhere from news headlines to billboard ads. Many recording artists are against them stating its their music and your listening to it for free. Political actions have been taken to restrict certain downloads. So why don't we just abolish all mp3's?.
             Curt Harris answered this question in his article "Napster of puppets," published by The BG News, Harris argues the benefits of mp3 file sharing. Harris takes this position by comparing mp3s to modern day tape traders. He says it's just like back in the old day when we used to tape record off the radio. The prices of cd's don't help deter people from downloading mp3s either. Harris states an example from his own life when he heard a song but didn't know who it was. He got home searched for it on Napster downloaded it and loved it. Then he bought all his cd's and saw him in concert twice, all due to mp3s. Although Harris's analysis has some strengths. I think he is too one-sided, leading him to overlook mp3 downloads from people who are opposed to mp3's such as profit, and the way the recording artist has no way of control over their own music. .
             Some of Harris's points seem relevant and realistic and also match my own personal experiences. I agree that the price of cd's does deter people from buying them. When I"m not sure if I will like a cd I go home download all the songs and burn them on a cd. If I like what I hear I will buy the cd but I'm not just going to spend close to twenty bucks on something I"m not sure I"ll like. Harris's point about finding new artists also connects with my experiences. One of my friends played this new cd, I couldn't remember the band's name but I remembered some of the song so I downloaded it, loved it then I downloaded every song I could find. After I was happy with all their songs I now own all of their cds.
             Harris, speaking as a student writer to other students, also states the ease of downloading mp3's.
