Lessons on Tuesdays with Morrie

Many people learn many things in many different ways. Most learn in school, some learn in asking questions, but the best lessons are taught from a good friend. As Morrie teaches Mitch lessons including not to be fearful of age, not to worry about what people think, and lessons on how to keep a good marriage, Mitch finds that Morrie speaks not only from experience and thought, but with deep sincerity from the heart.
Mitch has a great fear of aging, but Morrie tells him not to worry about this issue. Morrie points out to Mitch that all society cares about these days is youth and sex. Not everyone needs to look young and be sexy to be happy or stay alive. He tells Mitch to separate from the envy and fear of all that. Mitch slowly begins to separate, but still does not understand the dumb complaints of people wanting to look skinnier, younger, and more sexy. Morrie helps Mitch begin to realize that it is not what you have, but who you are that counts more than anything you can buy. .
Morrie teaches Mitch not to worry what people think of you. He tells him to say and do things from the heart. Mitch learns that you should always have a purpose for doing things. You are not supposed to do or say something just because someone else says it is right. The heart and mind can see things differently. It is best to follow through with what you believe, instead of allowing times or circumstances to change what is truly felt in the heart and soul. "To thine own self be true.".
When Mitch brings his wife in to his tenth visit with Morrie, it brings up the subject of marriage and the secrets to keeping your marriage alive. Morrie tells Mitch that in this culture it is very important to find a true, loving relationship because all the culture in the world could not give one that. It is good to have friends, they are great, but it is only the love of a spouse that is able to be there and help each other during down times.
