An issue since the birth of our great nation, gun control and gun crime has plagued our homes with death. But is gun control the answer? Do guns kill people, or do people kill people? That is one issue to be discussed in the search for the right answer. I chose this topic in an attempt to throw out the facts of gun control and hopefully come to the best possible conclusion. A few reasons our founding fathers gave to keep guns legal are: to allow people to form an effective militia against an overpowering government, and to allow ownership because its a freedom. Given the ideals and freedoms of our control set forth by our founding fore fathers, I believe that guns should never be outlawed; however, I do believe in a system of limited monitoring. .
The beginnings of the creation of the gun started when gun powder was discovered as early as 1247. Later, the creation of the first crude handgun was made in 1364. Since then the invention of the gun has been the primary weapon used to kill things: whether it be for constructive destructive uses. Gun control became a prominent issue in the 1960's with the rapid assassinations of important figures, such as: President Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and John Lennon. Even more recently than that, the fight for heavier gun control came about with the incident at Columbine High School. As well known, Columbine was famous for a couple of high school students attaining possession of guns, bringing them to school, and killing several high school students. .
Many claim that legal gun ownership is the reason for murders, and crime. Other countries which believed this and acted upon it have had partial success. Philip Cook revealed that "Handguns are 20% of the firearms in use today, but are involved in 90% of criminal and unintentional firearm injuries (Cook, 18)." People believe that it is human nature to be evil and taking away the capacity to carry out evil actions is the best way to prevent harm to people.
