Gay-Straight Alliances Have Difficulty Uniting

Without gay-straight alliances it is impossible for a comfortable discrimination free environment to be provided for students to express themselves and their feelings with other homosexual students and supporting straight students. .
When the student body is informed about sexual preference in heath classes that highlight sex education, they will have a better understanding of their classmates. According to a survey conducted by The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, less than half of the students noted that homosexuality and sexual orientation was discussed in class (Sex). How can teachers and students be able to tolerate their homophobia if they do not make an attempt to understand it? Many view gay-straight alliances as clubs dealing with just sex. Some parents imagine their children meeting at an after school club to share tips and experiences. Most of the existing clubs are not allowed to discuss sex. Yet, sex education is as important in the classroom as general education. "Seventy-four percent of parents want topics such as homosexuality to be "discussed in a way that provides a fair and balanced presentation of the facts and different views in society. Also, more than half of the parents surveyed want sex education to last half a semester or longer"" (Sex). Obviously parents want their children to know about alternative lifestyles and if students are educated about them then tolerance and acceptance of homosexual students will become possible.
Every person has been granted the right to assemble and free speech in the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights. School districts across the nation vary policies on how to handle new and controversial clubs like gay-straight alliances. According to an article from the Associated Press, the Equal Access Act protects the students" right to assemble. The act "prohibits public schools that take federal money from excluding particular non-curricular clubs if they allow others" (Associated).
