August 6th, 1945, 70,000 lives were ended in a matter of seconds. The United States had dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Today many argue over whether or not the US should have done so. Was it entirely necessary that we drop such a destructive weapon? Yes, it was. First, we must look at what was going on at the time the decision was made. The US had been fighting the war since 1941. Morale and resources were low but each side continued to fight, and both were determined to win. The best thing that could possibly have happened would have been to bring the war to a quick end with a minimum number of causalities.
If the atomic bombs had not been used, the obvious thing is that the war would have continued. The US forces would have to invade the island of Japan. How many people do you think would have died if this had happened? Our forces would not only have to fight the Japanese military; they would have to fight the civilians as well. The Japanese government had also been equipping the commoners with any kind of weapon they could get their hands on. It is true that this could mean a Japanese citizen could have any kind of weapon known to man. The number of deaths that would have occurred would have been much greater, and an invasion would have taken a longer period of time. The Japanese would have continued to fight the US with all of what they had; spears to guns and knives, whatever they could get their hands on, just as long as long as they could still put up a good fight with the enemy. Some civilians were ready to fight with spears against the US. The reason they were going to fight with spears was, the government just didn't have the resources needed to give anyone a gun. .
One of the major reasons why the Japanese were so low on resources was because of US naval blockades. This is one of the reasons why the US didn't want to drop the bomb. The Japanese civilians and the military were ready to fight with everything they had.
