Do Young Boys Need a Father More Than a Family?

It is important to know how to best raise a child so that they may lead more productive lives down the road and not be forever scarred as adults. In this case we focus on young men because research strongly suggests that the absence of a father impacts young men far more than it does young women (Elium 12).
Often times the emotional role that a father can play in a child's life is overlooked. It has long been assumed that a woman can provide all the needs for a child, that the father's main purpose was to support his family financially. Now that approximately 50% of marriages end in divorce (Gallagher) and a near majority of families do not have a two-parent household, it is easier to step back and examine how important the role of a father really is now that so many have grown up without one. It is even more telling that males who live with just their father have a such a low rate of crime and delinquency. It is now being suggested that a father maybe more essential than any other element in the development of young men. I wish to delve further into the issue and possibly find what a father provides that others cannot, as well as establishing that my original assumption based on the research I have encountered is true. .
There are a variety of variables that may dramatically change my findings if they are altered. For example, if the father has remarried after divorce or if a young boy lives with step parents of either sex, than he is just as likely to act up as a boy without any father. Age at the time of separation is also a factor. Perhaps if a child has never known life with a father, it will not be as difficult on him as a boy who is suddenly forced to live with only his mother. Are there any differences between a child who sees his father occasionally and a child who never sees his father? These are all factors that have not been sufficiently researched to provide definite answers.
