Life lesson 101

Morrie sees that Mitch has the potential to revive his spirit and his kindness, and can redeem himself if he so chooses. Morrie, however, must inevitably suffer as a lively spirit unseeing within a dying, transparent body. This is just one of the many lessons that Morrie teaches in his final class of life 101.
The second major life lesson that Morrie uses to change Mitch's outlook on life is learning about being in a loving relationship. Morrie says that love is essential for fulfillment and happiness. He summarizes this lesson when he states, "Love each other or perish" (Albom 91). Morrie is trying to relate to Mitch that to survive, people need other people who they can give love to, and who will love them back. Morrie considers that he is very fortunate because he has a great support system, including Mitch, who cares for him with as much love as he shows to them. Alain Botton of the New York Times states, "Tuesdays with Morrie is to be told that we should think more of love and less of money" (Botton 2). This is exactly what Morrie is trying to relay to Mitch, that the path he is heading down right now revolves around working and money. In the long run of things all the money in the world will not buy happiness. You need to have the loving backing of a good family support system to make you happy. He also tries to make Mitch realize that he needs to be in a good loving marriage. On the topic of marriage Morrie states, "If you don't respect the other person, you"re going to have a lot of trouble. If you don't know how to compromise, you"re going to have a lot of trouble" (Albom 149). Compromising is Mitch's problem. He is never willing to meet Janine half way because of his work responsibilities. Mitch needs to respect the marriage that he is in and consider Janine's feelings once and a while. This is just another big lesson that Morrie teaches in his final class life 101.
