The lottery

" These were the last words used in the story "The Lottery," by Shirley Jackson. These were that last words of Tessie Hutchinson before the wrath of the lottery was upon her. It seems that in the story the lottery was a way of life and it didn't sound so bad at first. But as the plot thickened, the lottery was far greater than anyone imagined. Will it ever end this terrible ritual? Well there were several instances in "The Lottery" in which it seems that their ritual of sacrifice is going to be abolished in due time.
First of all, we must understand what the black box means or symbolizes. It is black. Black is the symbol of death, evil, and mystery. All of these apply to "The Lottery." The box has the mystery of who is going to be the sacrificial lamb for the year. The ritual seems to a way of life, but yet it seems evil to the individual who is reading. Then it means death, well, whoever gets picked dies. Now that we have covered the box, what about symbolic analysis of the text?.
"The original paraphernalia had been lost years ago, and the black box now resting on the stool had been put into use even before Old Man Warner, the oldest man in town, was born." The original equipment for the lottery had been lost and the new box is old. The ritual seems to be a lost cause in my opinion because they spoke later of other towns abolishing the lottery. The town gives no clear explanation why they need to continue with this ritual. They spoke right after saying for years Mr. Summers had wanted a new box because this one is old and, "Grew shabbier every year, by now it was no longer completely black but splintered badly along one side to s how the original wood color, and in some places faded or stained." No one wanted to make a new box because there is no point to continue this ritual, the box is old and tarnished like the ritual. The box is falling apart, like the beliefs of the townspeople.
