Capital punishment

During a sociology class we got into a heavy debate on the topic capital punishment. A lot of good points for and against it came up in our debate. From this, I became very interested in the topic. My side of the debate rests in the hands of the people against it. I have more than just a simple reason to believe that capital punishment is wrong and should not be used in this country. The reasons I chose this side is because capital punishment contradicts itself, it is cruel, and has a question of innocence involved in the final decision of punishment. .
I do not believe that a murderer about to commit a crime, as hennas as murder, is in the right state of mind. The thought of killing this person for some reason must be running through their mind continuously before they actually kill them. This murderer knows in the back of his mind however, if he were to kill he would in turned be punished. The punishment that he would most likely get would be capital punishment, and he is aware of this fact. None of the things running through his mind, before the murder, must have meant anything to this sick person. If he had any morality left in him, he would have calmed down, and rethought the actions and results beforehand. If he went on, and committed a murder, I believe he is a disturbed individual that needs psychiatric help. So when this man kills they punish him with what he knew he would get, it's not a big surprise to him. If he really cared about himself dying, do you think he would have committed a crime that resulted in the punishment of him dying? I don't believe so. But, if you locked him up for life, he may have that chance to become somewhat mortal, and realize what he did was wrong through psychiatric counseling. He now has his whole life to think about what he did, on the other hand the capital punished murderer only had to live with what he did for the time he served in his cell.
