Descartes

You are not truly feeling things so, this point actually brings into question the mind itself, which is what Descartes later claims alone can be trusted. There are other clear examples, however, where the senses are fooled and where the mind itself has to work things out. For example, a stick in water looks bent, when actually it is straight. Here it is clear that one sense, sight, will fool you. However, even without the mind you can run your fingers down the stick and discover that it is straight. This maybe suggests that a combination of mind and body is necessary, rather than simply mental scrutiny as it is said later in the book. .
This leads to the question "can the mind think prior to experience?" This is effectively impossible to know as no one has had a mind separate from experience. However, maybe this fact itself tells us that it is impossible for the mind to think prior to experience. Certainly it would seem that the mind needs some kind of experience of physical things to base its thoughts on. Everything which is thought about in the mind begins with some kind of physical experience, whether it be true or false. It could be said, however, that thought is triggered by an innate reflex, in which case experience may not be necessary for thought. If the Platonic idea of the world of the Forms is to be believed, the mind may have thought before experience as it will exist in the world of the Forms before existing in us and again after existing in us. However, it is not clear whether, in this other world, it has thought without experience or not. .
The extent to which Descartes is a foundationalist shows one of the main reasons for the method of doubt. As already mentioned, he thinks that even the most basic parts of his thought processes are things which can be called into doubt even in very small ways. Therefore, if even these basic principles can be doubted the more complex parts of his thought which rest on them are at risk of being false.
