Convergence

And for a second she wore a look of extreme dignity standing by the flower shop in the sunlight while the car passed at a foots pace, with its blinds drawn. The Queen going to some hospital; the Queen opening some bazaar, thought Clarissa(Woolf 17). - The way Dalloway and the crowd react to the unknown traveler in the car is ridiculous in the fact that they have no concrete evidence of who this person is yet they give it such high standards. However, what is important to note is that they reacted. They had solid reactions to a fantasy in each of their minds. They all thought as one and all acted as one.
But all thought is not as pleasant in the book, as looking at a machine and thinking it a symbol of high royalty. In perhaps one of the most bitter moments of the book, Lucrezia and Peter hear a song sung by an old woman. Peter hears it and he thinks of his relationship of past with Mrs. Dalloway and Lucrezia hears it and thinks of her present relationship with Septimus. Each on different timelines but of the same thought. I live and love, yet you live and love no one. You live and let die.

Lucrezia wants real communication and love with her husband and Peter wants communication and real love with Mrs. Dalloway. Although Peter and Lucrezia are different in age, gender, and wealth they are brought together by the woman's song. They converge together on the woman's song thinking of their plight and wishes of the future while they dwell on the past and present. The song a story of romance between a dead lover and woman. A connection with one active participant.
In another example of object given substantial importance and symbolism, is Mrs. Dalloway's daughter, Elizabeth. Miss Kilman and Mrs. Dalloway see Elizabeth as an heir. Whether it be biological or not, they see in Elizabeth as a prize. Both woman have great disdain for one another and create fantasies about one another, in order to vindicate their hatred towards one another.
