What faith can do



             Contrary to the fact that some oppose the idea of faith-based programs, others believe that faith-based groups help ex-offenders. Faith-based groups play an informal but significant role in helping released offenders rebuild their lives ("Faith-Based Groups Help Ex-Offenders"). "Faith-based groups help adults make a new start through study and discussion groups, choir, one-on-one spiritual counseling, and sports and social activities. They also provide practical help such as rental assistance, food and clothing banks, and transportation" ("Faith-Based Groups Help Ex-Offenders"). These programs help promote re-integration of offenders into society and address life skills from a spiritual perspective (Gingerich, 1). .
             Once some inmates are released, they seem to forget the new found faith that they acquired while they were behind bars. It is imbedded in others. The Florida Department of Corrections officials have created "faith-based" dormitories at some prisons where a $4.5 million statewide effort to provide specialized services and housing to religious inmates and hire additional chaplains and counselors at seven prisons (Chachere, 1). Once the program is complete, 400 religious inmates will live separately from other prisoners and spend their days immersed in religious services and study, specialized counseling and a mandatory daily devotional period (Chachere, 1).
             Correctional officials theorize that inmates who get time for intense soul searching might be able to come to terms with their troubled lives and change (Chachere, 2). Many inmates create a family for themselves in the program. In most cases, it is the only family that they have ever known (Chachere, 2). Inmates in the religious program are subject to the same rules as other inmates and those who break them must argue their case to their dorm mates before being allowed back into the program (Chachere, 2). .
             Inmates are taught that when they have the Lord in their heart, wherever they are, whatever their circumstances, they will be happy (Chachere, 2).
