Lord of the Ring

"In most hero stories, the hero is introduced in ordinary surroundings, in a mundane world, doing mundane things. Generally, the hero begins as a non-hero; innocent, young, simple, or humble" (Seger319) This is certainly true of the main hero Frodo Bagains of Lord of the Rings. Frodo's opening scene in the movie sets the tone for his pre-hero image. The audience's first glimpse of Fordo is of him sitting on a prairie of green grass on a beautiful sunny day reading a book beneath a tree. Frodo is the exhibit of childish innocence: he has lived in Hobbition all his life and longs for the adventures of the outside world in which he has no knowledge of. He is, as Seger describes it, "young , innocent, [and] and simple." However as the story progresses, Frodo's childish innocence is diminished as he takes on the task of the saving middle earth by destroying The Ring of Sauron the evil lord. Frodo is at first reluctant to take on the task of the ring bearer but through obligations he is forced into the role. He is faced with an impossible quest but along the way he receives help from his friends : Sam , Pippin, Mary, Aragon, Gandalf, Legolas, Gimi, and Borimir. .
Frodo is the personification of the heroic myth that Seger talks of in her essay "Creating the Myth". Seger states that in all hero stories , there is a certain pattern to developing the heroic qualities that help to make the story so successful in the eyes of the audience. This hero myth therefore is generated through the audience's desire to identify with the hero in an emotional level. The audience likes to see the ordinary man do extraordinary things and Frodo is the epiphany of that concept. The viewers of this movie see Frodo as a success story that mirrors their own desires for adventure and courage in the face of danger. By allowing the audience to identify with Frodo, this movie has met with great box office ratings and great reviews.
