In the 1700's, a group of people in England decided to leave that country and sail to a new land because they were tired of being told what they could do and when they could do it. A new land and a new beginning meant they could make their own decisions for their families and make a new life for themselves. The term "Democracy is a theoretical construct, and not an actual right as practiced and expressed in the global community of nations" is a term that our forefathers would not believe they left England for, and traveled over the ocean to come to a new land to start a new life. Democracy is a theoretical construct means democracy is an untried assumption. If our democracy is untried, then what have we as Americans being doing for over two hundred years.
In those early days, the early fathers got together and wrote the constitution and the bill of rights to set the standards for each person, so he could make his life how he wanted to. To protect these ways of life, elections were held to elect people to office to protect our rights from each other and from other countries as well. So began democracy in America. You choose how to live your life and not live the life someone else has chosen for you to live.
One of the early fathers thoughts was how each person could live their own life. They felt the importance of each individual making up their own mind on what they wanted to do with their own life and not being told what to do. Instead of the government telling you what your job was and where you worked, you have the right to go to school and make whatever life you can for you and your family. You have the right to be a bum or study and work to become a doctor. In the paper by Amy Tan, she stated that in China, people did not choose careers; they had jobs assigned to them.
As stated above, our democracy has been practiced for over two hundred years. Practiced means we have lived our lives as we have wanted until we see a change that is needed, and we work to make that change.
