We all know what happened last Thursday in Madrid. Five terrorist attacks in trains killed 200 people and injured hundreds of them. .
All these few days before the elections in Spain. .
In the beginning no terrorist group had taken the responsibility for the attacks and everybody was confused. .
The Spanish government and Athnar wanted to persuade the public that it had nothing to do with Al Kaida and the fact that Spanish troops were involved in the war in Iraq. Their aim was not to be connected with their decision to support the war in Iraq and lose the elections. This proves another theory of Furedi that the politicians that are authority figures and ignore what the people want (Spanish people didn't agree on sending troops) provoke a negative reaction by the people (vote against them) and the terrorist groups that organized the attacks as a response to their alliance with the USA.
Finally, it was proven that Al kaida or at least Muslims were involved in the attack. Athnar lost the elections as the Spanish people thought that this was a great chance to punish the government. .
The terrorist attacks in Madrid became a major political issue in the world and the international and local media were covering the event minute by minute. .
We believe that for one reason this was the case as the sense of security was wounded. .
As Furedi says modern societies are facing uncertainty and they have the need to feel secure. This tragic event endangered this need and that is why media gave so much attention. .
The attack depicts clearly the fear of the Western societies towards the Islamic nations and groups. It is not a coincidence that after the 11th September, people associate every tragic event with Islamic terrorist groups.
