The Outsiders

The Outsiders, tells a story about the innate differences between socially different groups of people, that could never get along. The groups being the Socials and the Greasers. Not only are the greasers different from the Socs status-wise, but also different by feelings and emotions. This essay will discuss these differences between the Socs and the Greasers.
Right when I started the book I was told by the main character that the greasers had something against the Socs, and vice versa. And because of finding out about the relationship that that greasers and the Socs have so early in the book, tells you right away that they are going to have innate differences. "We get jumped by the Socs." (p.2). Page two of a book isn't really that far into the book. This sentence came even before Ponyboy went into a detailed description of himself or any other characters of the book. Therefore this one sentence tells you right away that there are big differences between the greasers and the Socs. " the West-side rich kids." (p.2). This is one very important sentence also mentioned in the second page. This difference of stature is like the foundation of all the differences. The rest of them build on this one difference. I believe that this is because the Socs think that they know what the greasers lives are like, poor, hard-working etc., and they are right. But they don't go into the depths of the greasers stature. The same with the greasers. They think they know what the Socs lives are all about, wealth, easy lives etc., but just like the Socs they don't go into the depth of their stature. Sure, they have wealth and easy lives but what about having too much freedom? Nearing the end of the book Ponyboy tries to figure out what the Socs are really like. But we don't really no if he really does find out. .
To me, it's not really the money that makes the Greaser and the Socs not get along, but it's more what goes on in their heads and their emotions.
