Galway Kinnell's Saint Francis and the Sow, has two types of comparison in the poem. The first part the bud is the center of main focal point, and the second part is the sow and the flower. They both can be explain in many different ways, and can be imagine something other than what I"m going to explain about those two objects. .
Let first start off with the first part of the poem. As I read into the first line "The bud stands for all things," there is not enough details and images yet, to support the bud; Kinnell explanation of the buds is not so clear, as I read down in the poem "even for things that don't flower, for everything flowers, from within, of self-blessing;" with that I know Kinnell is saying that the bud of the flower is something ugly or undeveloped, or you can say the bud is turning into a flower, which might not be lovely at the time, but slowly will bloom like a flower with beauty. As I read down the poem "Though sometimes it is necessary to reteach a thing its loviness," in this line Kinnelll is probably saying that sometimes the bud or something can forget that we all have love and beauty inside of ourselves; but all we need is somebody to show us that we do have love inside. As we read on the next line " to put a hand on its brow of the flower and retell it in words and in touch it is lovey until it flowers again from within, of self-blessing;" in this line Kinnell is saying that we do have a good side of ourselves, and all we need is that we have to have somebody to bring it out, and let us know that we do have a love and beauty inside with ourselves. It might be a ugly process but soon eventually somebody would bring the beauty of ourselves out of the hole.
Lets now move on with the second the second part of the poem, as I read, "as Saint Francis put his hand on the creased forehead of the sow, and told her thick length, from the earthen snout all the way through the fodder and slops to the spirtual curl of the tail," from what I read, I see that Saint Francis is blessing the sow, a pig or you can call it a hideous creature.
