Teaching has been seen as a noble and high position for centuries. Many great and influential people of this world have been called "teacher."" Socrates, Plato, Jesus Christ were all known as wonderful teachers. In order to be a true teacher, one must inspire his or her pupils to strive for a better understanding of the world, to cause a desire to learn. A teacher, in order to perform at the highest standards, must be well educated, convicted about particular area of study, and dedicated to providing quality education for others. .
What has teaching become in today's world of education? It has become a distorted and manipulated glory by so many because of one little word: Tenure. In simple terms the world tenure means "the status of holding one's position on a permanent basis without periodic contract renewals- (Dictionary.com). Because of tenure, unfit teachers are allowed to continue teaching for years after their expatriation date has passed. Although some aspects of tenure are positive, the harmful negative aspects outweigh and good. A problem occurs with tenure when it protects teachers from being released from a job that is unsuitable for them; therefore, the problem with tenure must be solved. .
Not every aspect of tenure is negative; tenure provides a number of positive outcomes. Four main qualities make tenure appealing to teacher as well as others. First and foremost, the primary result of tenure is providing job security for teachers (Brekkle). This insures teachers who have taught for a number of years won't loose their jobs to fresh new teacher who are straight out of college preventing the administration from hiring and firing based on saving money, not the quality of the teachers. Secondly, it allows teachers to teach according to how they deem necessary, free from fear that they have to please the administration to keep their job. For example, college professors would be allowed to share their own views and opinions without fear of punishment from administration.
