CAUSES OF THE MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR


             There are many events and conditions that led up to the Mexican American War. The Exploration of the West, Manifest Destiny, and the Texas and Bear Flag Republic Revolts, are just a few things that led to the war. Due to the war, the Chicano Movement was affected in a few ways. Things were rekindled during the Chicano Movement that traced back to the Mexican American War. .
             Anglos found Mexican land to be very beneficial. Their territory was an important source of raw material for the Market Revolution. Anglos were determined to migrate to the Western Pacific with raw materials shipped from New York in order to make trades along the Pacific Ocean with China. Cattle hides were exported to New York, where Irish factory laborers manufactured boots and shoes. The Anglos became "squatters" and did not want leave. A squatter is a phrase used to describe someone who comes to someone else's land and refuses to leave. This caused Mexicans to become very angry.
             Manifest Destiny is a term used for territorial expansion, which the Anglos felt was a God given right to take over land. The Anglos were squatting in California in order to get to the Pacific Coast and make trade with China. They squatted on Texas for the expansion of slavery, which both states were Mexican territory. Manifest Destiny led to the Mexican American War because Anglos felt they were superior over the Mexicans and could take over their land, and the Mexicans refused to give up their land. .
             The war began in 1836, when some Americans in Texas began an armed insurrection against Mexican authority. Barricading themselves in the Alamo, 175 Texas rebels initiated hostilities in a struggle for what would be called the Lone Star Republic. Troops were sent to suppress the rebellion because the Mexican government declared the action illegal. But the rebels refused to surrender. After the battle two Americans died, which were Jim Bowie, and Davy Crocker, and 630 Mexicans died.
