Western Civilization

In the last class discussion our focus concentrated on school and the life style that people live in when school is present in their lives. I also began to think about how most of us didn't believe that we, the United States, are in the middle of a change. The more I thought about it the more I began to realize that we are. These two topics seem to be intertwined in many places. To a certain point school would not be were it is today if it wasn't for technology and on the opposite end of the spectrum technology wouldn't have had the opportunities to advance in this area if the demand for it wasn't there.
Prior to the Enlightenment people had nothing other to believe other than the concepts and fate that they were taught. People during this time weren't allowed to be as educated, so it was very easy for them to except the preconceived ideas of their religious, social, and political leaders about the world and the human condition. After everything that happened in the Scientific Revolution people began to form salons. They were no longer going to sit around and let people tell them how things were going to be. These were places were people could gather and become more educated on many different aspects of life that were being discussed at the time. States should exist not simply to accumulate power but also to enhance human happiness.
With education people would have the ability to move up the economic ladder. The same could be said about today's society except for one thing. During the period of the Enlightment people wanted to learn because during that time people wanted to form there own idea's. It seems to me that now people go to school because society has developed this notion that in order to achieve you need a degree or some type of certification. The schools have created programs to achieve these degrees but in order to get there you need to be a so called "Well rounded student".
