Atomic Bomb

Many say that Japan was on the verge of surrender when these bombs were dropped and it was extremely unnecessary to bomb them. It was said that the Japanese were seeking an approach to surrender with minimal embarrassment on their part. Had the Japanese not put their pride ahead of their nation this atrocity would not have happened. I am not placing low importance on the life of the Japanese, but we must consider the amount of Japanese taking their own lives due to their pride. That demonstrates the likelihood of a Japanese surrender. The US could not sit back while kamikaze techniques killed countless American lives. These two nations were at war and the U.S. could not solely depend on a chance of surrender on the part of a nation who had ruthlessly attacked them months before. It is true that over 100,000 Japanese citizens had lost their lives as a result of the explosions, but what about those American lives lost at Pearl Harbor? (Davidson-Lytle 132) Furthermore, those opposed to the atomic bomb felt that the US demonstration should have been made on barren land in order to ask for Japan's surrender. (140) In reality, had the Americans made this demonstration on inhabited land, it would not have been any more likely to make the proud Japanese surrender quicker. Even on the slight possibility that it would have made the Japanese surrender, war cannot be operated and relied upon chance. Not to mention the fact that no bombs could have been wasted due to their extreme financial investment. (132) Those against the use of the bomb present the question of ethicalness. In Hiroshima and Nagasaki individuals were vaporized, leaving behind only charred shadows. Those subjected to less radiation got cancer while babies were born with deformities and defects. Though each of these situations are extremely unfortunate, they play upon our weaknesses as human beings. A war must be fought in order to be won and no weaknesses must be shown.
