Chaos

Bodega Bay is the setting of Alfred Hitchcock's highly acclaimed horror/suspense film, "The Birds". It is a quaint, quite town where everything seems to be in order. However a main focus for any viewer would be the birds themselves, and how they bring chaos to each of the character's lives through their own problems and hidden secrets. All the characters appear calm and collective, however each has his/her own problems which the birds force them to face, bringing chaos into their lives. "[Hitchcock] presents humans as personally fragmented but not beyond remedy. The cure is love. This is a central subject in Hitchcock's filmed world: love cannot be earned or deserved; it must be almost miraculous, even illogical yet it brings clarity and purpose to a chaotic world" (Brill 20). This quote can be manipulated to relate to any of the characters, but does so most strongly towards Melanie Daniels, mainly because of her chance meeting with Mitch. The love that may be evoked from this meeting is both illogical and chaotic. One of the most interesting and developed characters, Melanie changes throughout the film. Although a rich daddy's girl with everything in her present life controlled and orderly, the birds cause Melanie to confront her feelings of abandonment as a child, bringing chaos and a mother figure to her life.
In the first scene, Melanie's character is thoroughly introduced. On the outside, she appears cocky, confident and in control. Strictly on appearance we can tell she is a very wealthy girl. Through her mannerism we see she is very selfish and believes she is the center of the world. She appears to be very much in control of her life. However, Mitch Brenner is then introduced, along with Melanie's first taste of chaos. Mitch does not appear to be interested in Melanie, which makes her lose structure to her life, because she believes everything she wants, she gets.
