Analysis of Frederick Douglass

He eventually fights back against him and this becomes the turning point of his life. Frederick succeeds in overcoming this man, one of the toughest around, both physically and mentally, which does a lot for his ego and for his thoughts of individualism.
             2. Explain how Douglass maintains objectivity on the one hand, and how he expresses his subjectivity on the other. Explain how successful you think Douglass is in each case. .
An example of Douglass's subjective writing is in Chapter 1 when he is describing the first time he witnessed a slave whipping. He says, "I never shall forget it whilst I remember anything." He displays his feelings at the utmost in the lines, "It was the blood-stained gate, the entrance to the hell of slavery, through which I was about to pass. It was a most terrible spectacle." He even goes on to say that his feelings were so strong at this time that he can't even bring himself to write about them, and even though it sounds like he is trying to be objective, that is a statement that very much shows his pain, of which impact I believe he was trying to achieve.
On the other hand, Douglass shows his objectivity in most of the writing of his story, of which I find to be an amazing fete. One example of this is the second paragraph of Chapter 5 where he is writing about his own treatment as a slave when he was a young boy. He explains his almost freezing to death so detachadely that it caused me to revere his strength, especially in the line "My feet have been so cracked with the frost, that the pen with which I am writing might be laid in the gashes." He makes something horrible seem almost humorous. .
Douglass was very successful both subjectively and objectively in this book. His goal was to remain as withdrawn as possible so as not to interfere with the message of his story. I found his ability to do this despite the conditions of his life to be awe-inspiring.
