There are both good and bad points within Miguel Martinez's essay, "Bastard". He begins with two strong paragraphs relating to his perception of a father and son relationship. He based his perception of father and son relationships on societies various definitions within literature, television and word of mouth from his friends. The first two paragraphs of the essay appear to relate to the author's search to discover what a father and son relationship really is. It becomes evident that he gets lost in his thoughts throughout the remainder of the essay.
In paragraph, one and two the author provides detailed thoughts he has regarding father and son relationships. He gives strong examples of what others have lead him to believe such as " this strange being, a sort of God, they call Daddy". In addition, quickly points out what he believes based upon his life, "There is no biological instinct inside us saying there should be someone else". The author appears content that it is just he and his mother.
In the third paragraph, his essay begins to provide less detail and appears to jump in time periods. The first sentence, "Off I went through school", makes it appear as though he completed school, however, he then changes the subject matter to relationships is mother had with two men when he was six. He notes that he never called them 'Dad' just 'Uncle'. This leaves the reader to wonder the significance this has on the author. Why did he refer to the men as 'Uncle'? He continues on to say that for the next ten years, that he and his mother did not see much of each other and she worked odd hours. What meals did his mother make a point of eating with him? This leaves the reader wondering who provided care for him during this ten-year period since it was just himself and his mother. .
Paragraph four begins by stating that his mother was able to spend time with him when he was sixteen, however, clearly notes that he was set in his ways by then.
