It Happened One Night is a black and white movie set in the time period after the depression. The plot of this movie follows two main characters. The first character is named Ellie. Ellie is the only child and daughter of a very rich and powerful businessman named Mr. Andrews. The character Ellie's personality is portrayed as a bratty, rich girl who thinks she is in control of any situation. The second main character, named Peter, is a newspaper reporter that has just recently lost his job for a New York City newspaper. Peter's personality is much different than Ellie's personality. Peter does not let things bother him, or at least does not let it show that things bother him. Peter is constantly "playing it cool" when he is around Ellie, when actually he is just as desperate as Ellie is.
In Act 1 we are introduced to Ellie and her rich father, Mr. Andrews. The setting is Mr. Andrews's personal yacht. Here we find out that Ellie has just gotten married to a man her father disapproves of. Mr. Andrews brings Ellie out on his yacht to keep her from her new husband. It is there on the yacht that the initial premise of the movie is revealed. While on the yacht Ellie decides that she is going to jump overboard and make her way to New York City to be with her new husband. On her trip back to New York City, we are introduced to the second main character, Peter. Ellie ends up having to ask a stranger to buy her a ticket because her powerful father has sent the police out looking for her and has even offered a reward for her safe return.
In the very beginning of Act 2, Ellie and Peter meet for the first time on a bus to New York City. The first legs of the bus trip are the pinch point of the story. As the bus is being boarded, we find Ellie and Peter fighting over a seat on the bus. As the bus travels through the night, Ellie decides to leave her seat and join Peter in the back of the bus because the large passenger seated next to Ellie fell asleep on her.
