They were forced to pay an enormous sum of L6,600 million for compensation for war related reparations and in addition to money, payment was made in the form of ships, trains, livestock and valuable natural resources. Their army was substantially reduced to 100,000 men while the navy was limited to only 24 ships. The war guilt continued to cover the country, reinstating the defeat and humiliation of the First World War. Anger and political division spread through the nation as Germany believed that if they did not have any input to the treaty, they were not bound by it. However this was not the case and Germany failed to meet the reparation demands in 1922. This forced France and Belgium to invade in 1923 and legally take what was owed in the form of raw materials and goods. The outraged workers went on strike in a campaign of "passive resistance". By issuing this operation Germany's industry ceased, leaving goods for trading scarce. Money became worthless as inflation increased forcing Germany into a time of hyperinflation. .
Throughout this demoralised era the growth and formation of Hitler and the Nazi party took place. Hitler just like many Germans was appalled and furious that the feeble German Government had agreed to the conditions of the Treaty of Versailles. On 8 November 1923 Hitler hijacked the meeting called to discuss new polices held at the Beer Hall Putsch. He forcefully announced his revolt against the Weimar Government and attempted to announce a seizure of power from the Bavarian regime. Hitler's unrestrained ambition desired the formation of a separate Government which could overpower and destroy the Weimar Government. However his intimidating operation failed as he was captured and charged with high treason two days later. Nevertheless Hitler was seen to be so admirable that his time in prison was reduced to only nine months. Therefore it can be concluded that if Hitler was capable of winning the hearts and minds of Germany's educated high court and jury members simply with his passionate speeches, then he would effortlessly be able to undermine the faith of a demoralised nation.
