Dischantments of Love

The settings in, Maria de Zayas, "The Disenchantments of Love", play a major role in the purpose of these disenchantments for women.
In "Too Late Undeceived", the setting adds a strong effect on the story it shows how much power men had on women and the concept of male domination. In this story the setting that Elena is in shows the lack of respect men have for women and the idea of cruelty in men, that don Jaime could put Elena true that suffering. Elena is kept in a little room, that only don Jaime has the key for the room. "Then he took from his purse a key and handed it to a servant who used it to open a little door right there in the hall" (146). The little space that Elena had to live in is significant to indicating how don Jaime, appose his power over her by not allowing her to do anything. Also the setting of where Elena had to eat is a metaphor for men depicting power on women, "she came up to the table and crawled beneath it". Elena is not even allowed to sit at the table with don Jaime, she must sit underneath the table, below don Jaime. Elena having to sit beneath the table is a why of don Jaime showing that he feels she is beneath him and women were in fact viewed as being below the men, not on the same level as men. Also, the story takes place in the Canary Islands, in a sicluded castle, this gives him a way to play God and do whatever he wants to Elena. In his castle, he makes the rules and determines what goes on. Being alone in a big castle on an island, don Jaime can do what he wants to Elena. The castle is almost like a mystery location, a lawless society of his own where he has all the privacy he needs to play God. "My servants dare not say a word of what goes on here to anyone, under pain of death" (147). .
In "The Most Infamous Revenge", the setting gives a strong effect on the story because your house is a place where your suppose to be safe, where the women stays pure, but unfortunately you don't get what the system promises you.
