Why should I be committed to America? Is it because we are better off economically than other countries? Is it because we have the ability to go wherever and do whatever we want, whenever we want to? Is it because we are the strongest country in the world? The answer to each of these is NO! My commitment to America should be because of my love for this country. As I look around myself, I see the diversity and beauty of this land and all it's people. Since the beginning of this country, Americans have always committed to making this a land of freedom, no matter if one is black or white, has light or dark colored hair, or even speaks a different language. Even though we have gone through times of prejudice, we, as Americans, have always found a way to work around it and make life nicer for everyone. .
Americans have had their own commitments to this country, even before it was born. Those early commitments are why the American Revolution took place. Look in the eyes of any veteran, and you will see the true commitment that he or she has for this country. Though the soldiers who fought in Vietnam were fighting to follow orders, they were ostracized for going there and fighting in a battle that had nothing to do with our country. Go up to one of these veterans and ask them if they regret doing this. I will guarantee that their answer will be, "No!" Their commitment to this country is so strong that not one person's words can ever break it. Even though they were probably hurt by the snide remarks they received, their commitment kept them strong. Even immigrants who have come to America from other countries have this commitment. Most of them have lived in oppression their entire lives, coming here now to seek refuge in this land of freedom and prosperity. They now live in a land where they do not have to worry about having to worship a certain god, or even if they will be persecuted for speaking their opinions.
