Romeo and Juliet

Friar Laurence helps Romeo and Juliet in numerours ways. In act two, scene three, Romeo comes to Friar Laurence with hopes that he will understand his love and perform the marriage between he and Juliet. The Friar agrees and marries them off. Romeo and Juliet come from two feuding families in Verona, Italy, the Capulets and the Montagues. The Friar does not tell the parents what he has done for their children, hoping that in time the marriage will bring peace to Verona. In act four, scene one, Juliet comes to Friar Laurence because she has just been told she must marry Count Paris. "Tell me not, friar, that thou hearst of this, unless thou tell me how I may prevent it. If in thy wisdom thou canst give no help, do thou but call my resolution wise and with this knife I will help it presently." The friar comes up with a plan to give Juliet a potion that will put her in a death like coma, and will last for 48 hours, then when she wakes, Romeo will be waiting for her and they can escape to Mantua. I think the Friar helped Romeo and Juliet the most after their deaths by revealing his involvment and explaining to their parents how the events took place. Ironically these events led to the end of the feud which was the Friar's hope all along.
Being a man of the church, I feel the Friar's actions were not entirely moral. I think Friar Laurence should have gotten consent from the parents before agreeing to marry the two. The Friar also told Romeo to go and stay the night with Juliet and then leave for Mantua. He suggested this knowing that the Prince had already banished him from Verona. Giving Juliet the potion was done to decieve the Capulet family which is not something you would expect from a man in his position.
