The Catcher in the Rye

In the novel: The Catcher in the Rye, the author J. Salinger demonstrates that Holden cannot deal with loss without falling into despair and loneliness. Throughout the novel Holden is unable to handle his brothers death, and his brother D.B. leaving him for Hollywood. This results in Holden feeling very depressed and lonely. Holden experiences his loss and loneliness as, a great source of pain and betrayal. Therefore he tries to cover up his emotions by not interacting with people, which leads to Holden being lonely.
In chapter 5 we see Holden trying to reach out to us (the reader) by telling a very personal story about his brother Allie. But towards the end of the chapter Holden stops telling us things about Allie because he cannot explain or express his loss and pain. "I slept in the garage the night he died, and broke all the goddamn windows with my fist, just for the hell of it." This is a strange quote because Holden states he broke all of the windows, just for the hell of it. This quote shows that Holden cannot deal with loss, because he has no one mature enough to help him express his pain. When Holden returns to Phoebe after being kicked out of school, Phoebe ask Holden what he likes. Holden has a very hard time on what to say. After a few minutes into the conversation with Phoebe, Holden states, "I like Allie", "Allies dead-You always say that!" Even though Holden knows Allies dead, Phoebe states the obvious that Allie is dead. We are constantly reminded throughout the book from Holden that Phoebe is a very intelligent person. But deep down Holden knows Phoebe is immature and is not mature enough to help him handle his loss of his brother Allie. His realization with Phoebe leads him into his hopelessness and depression state. A different kind of loss is when Holden sees his brother D.B. leave for Hollywood. This is significant because Holden feels like D.B abandoned him in his time of need, when Allie died and being sent off to boarding school.
