If college's primary function isn't preparing students how to work in the world of work, then what is? When you look at the real deal in what colleges have in store for students, it's quite simple to see that they just want students to become an expert in the major. They want these students to become experts within about 2-3 years. That other 2 years students spend is what I see a waste of time. Not only is it a waste of time, but it is also a great way for colleges to rake in the money. It doesn't seem quite right for students to pay ridiculous amounts of money for classes that won't do them that much good later on in the future. Yes, it is true that some of the classes taken are needed, such as English and Math, but for the most part the other classes don't really help you out in your major. The only thing that is good about General Education is that it is good for students who are not sure about what they want to major in. They have a whole field that they can look at and see what is right for them. For those who already know what they want to do, they should be able to start of right with their major classes. If colleges want to change their perspective around, they should look at considering incorporating classes that require you to have a internship. In fact, internships should just become part of the curriculum. It would help a lot of students be prepared for the world of work, and their money would be put into good use. Universities have to understand that their job is to look out for the students and help them succeed in life, and not take them for everything they are worth. Universities have to give students all the best things they can give and letting students be able to experience the life of the working is the best way for them to start learning how to become successful. How many more students will their be that will fail in the real world of work in order for colleges to see that their plan is going all wrong?.
