Analysis on cohesive reference from the selected text.
This excerpt was picked out from the novel, Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets. It is about Harry got a broken arm and tried to find his friend. Many lexical collocations can be identified within it, which are discussed here. The simplest level of lexical cohesion: synonymy, antonymy, repetition, hyponymy, meronymy is called Reiteration, also will be discussed as follows in order to analyze how the text make cohesive chains according to the author's purposes.
The system of personal reference running through the text according largely to anaphoric links to the first word of the text "Harry." Remarkably, through out several paragraphs, "Harry" is used frequently followed by the verbs: Harry dressed, Harry left, Harry passed, Harry forced, Harry started. This appearance might be the author's objective in order to achieve her purpose by letting the reader reminding or wanting to emphasize this character since there isn't only one character in the text. In the second sentence contains "He", the subject pronoun that is regarded as anaphoric personal reference. .
There are further cohesive occurrences of the pronoun "he" in the text:.
             He sat up.
             He was awake.
             He had.
             He fed.
             He could.
             He opened .
These are accompanied by several examples of ellipsis involving omission of the pronoun before the verbs in the pattern of simple past forms: looked, watched, headed, heard, locked, began. The possessives form his plays a cohesive role in the text: his arm in Sentence1, which is, repeated (repetition) in the bottom of paragraph1. However, the term arm and bones being in the relationship of synonymy in the above text. The relationship is a text -bound one and it could be refer to this relationship as contextual synonymy because the words are not necessarily lexical synonymyms but here, referentially, they are. Then, it is occurs again in the 10th paragrph.
